So I remember that one as a real good time. as far as not just being the kid anymore, but being one of the guys. The album was recorded at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. It was produced by Gary Katz and written by band members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. So I got to work with a lot of my heroes on that record. Cant Buy a Thrill is the debut studio album by the American rock band Steely Dan, released in November 1972 by ABC Records. And Walsh just called him and he came down, and here I had him and Al Perkins from Manassas and Graham Nash came in. And I was just drooling to work with this guy. I always looked up to Russell immensely from his James Taylor and Carole King work. The thing that I'm most proud of with that record is that it opened the door to the people I wanted to work with. What's funny to me is by 12th grade '79/'80 I was writing (what we thought were "brilliant")songs with a buddy from school and we would play these songs at lunch time (or break time,before or after school) since we would bring our crappy guitars to school with us. The rest of their discography consists of lots of filler and a few songs with hit qualities ('You Can Do Magic'). Plus they only had two really good albums and even those two albums were somewhat derivative of CSN. I love the "Hits" but, agree that America has a very nice body of "Non-Hit" songs that are as good (some better depending on what your tastes are of course) Acoustically highly recommended! I think that most folks probably think they aren't 'rock' enough rather than the above observations. So, America,CSN (&Y) ,DF,NY, were the second wave of acoustic influence for me by the late '70s. Of course I had Led Zep III in '74 and JP's acoustics wowed me back then before ever thinking of playing guitar. But with his 1995 album Van Go Gan, Beckley began a parallel solo career that also continues to this very day. I bought America's S/T by '78 and loved it.That was the start to "branching out" for me in this genera. For over fifty years, Gerry Beckley has performed, written, and recorded with the group he co-founded with Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek, America. When I first learned to play guitar (late '70s)I had no choice but to learn/practice on a trashed 12 string guitar with horribly high action on the fretboard & fret buzz on certain frets LOL.īut, this made me listen to more of the acoustic leaning artists and really appreciate it more since I couldn't bang out Blackdog Or Warpigs to much "effect" on a "12 string" like I really wanted to instead.
